The Hare and the Tortoise – Taking Our Time to Get There Faster
Recently, I was asked about the top barriers to a successful transformation
programme. My response:
1. Lack of Accountability – Who owns the outcome, and are they engaged or
absent?
2. Unclear Scope – Which areas, systems, and customers are affected? Are
they fully mapped?
3. Resource Shortages – Are essential team members available as needed, or
will absences disrupt progress?
4. Unrealistic Expectations – Why would this time be different without tangible
change?
In a Lean transformation with a major insurer, we faced challenges with their Cost
Model projects, which frequently overran, costing millions in lost benefits. The latest
implementation was plagued by scope changes and late-stage flaws.
After a comprehensive review, we piloted a ‘test and learn’ approach, extending the
Scoping phase from 2 to 8 weeks. This allowed for deep understanding and early
issue resolution, eliminating late surprises.
We tackled critical resource availability, down to understanding exact capacity and
holiday gaps. Periodic reviews ensured our plan and assumptions remained
grounded.
The result? Delivery completed 16 weeks ahead of prior cycles—a 42%
improvement. The business saved £1.2M on this small-scale model alone, with
potential benefits from future models projected at over £10M.
Key Takeaways for Lean Project Delivery:
1. Focus on Flow
2. Minimise Handoffs
3. Reduce Bottlenecks
4. Understand the Value Stream
